How much horsepower will a mopar 8 3/4 rear handle? Does my 440 stroker build require a Dana 60?

Looking for between 500 - 700hp and a ton of torque. Will a 8 3/4 handle this? If not, is a Dana 60 the logical alternative? I have a '73 Challenger, any idea which cars besides a barracuda I could pull a Dana 60 that would fit?

Thanks!|||You are looking for 500 to 700 but you likely are not going to get it. The 8 3/4 will be fine. They are as tuff as a 9" Ford.|||im at the drag strip just about every weekend and a lot of cars making any kind of power ford dodge or chevy have the ford 9 in rear end under them as im told it will hold up to 7 or 8 hundred horsepower and just as much torque as for the dana 60 its a good rear end but its heavy|||I would run the 8 3/4 rear end until it breaks then you'll know. I know guys who street raced with them for ages and they lasted quite a while.

Anything over 500hp and you may want to go with a custom housing and gear set.

Richmond makes some nice stuff. http://www.richmondgear.com/

Dana 60 is a pretty good differential but it's all in the gears and what you do with the car. I haven't got an interchange book in front of me but you could call a scrap yard because they do have a book and can tell you what will fit.

To get it to hook up hard you're going to need a four link set up or ladder bars, not just leaf springs and traction bars.
