Where is #1 spark plug wire located on the distributor of a 1972 mopar 413 engine?

i have a 1972 mopar engine in a motorhome that i just finished having the heads re-worked and new push rods to replace a couple of bent ones. i need to know where #1 spark plug wire goes on the distrib. cap. when i try to start the motor, it back fires up thru the carburator. can someone please help me.|||number #1 plug is left front, as your sitting in it. follow it to the cap. mark the hole on the cap, if it's not marked already.

your just 180 out on the rotor.

gotta make sure all valves are closed on the #1 cyl, that the #1 piston is up top, and the rotor is pointing to the #1 plug on the cap.

pull #1 plug. put you finger in the hole. turn the crank till your finger pops out. you'll note the your just a few degrees btdc. move it to tdc. thats done. then the rotor has to point to the #1 plug wire on the cap. you might see at this time your rotor is pointing away from the #1 hole. this is where your 180 out. pull the distributor, dont turn the housing. turn the rotor to the #1 position and reinstall. should be good to go with your trusty light.

William beat me to it......|||HI

If you pulled the distributor then the easyest way would be to roll the motor over to where the timing mark is a TDC or 0 deg. then pull the cap off It well be eather pointing to the #1 spot or 180 degs off.. try it there and if it don't start then move the wires 180 deg. and it should start.. those are the only two senaireo's.. The reason I say it could be 180 degs off is that the timing mark comes up to TDC twice on number 1.. once for TDC of the compression stroke (the one you want) and once to TDC for the exhaust stroke. then make sure the fireing order is right for the rotation of the pointer (rotor)..

good luck

tim|||The easiest way to identify it is to:

Note the mark on the crankshaft pulley which identifies TDC (Top Dead Center).

Remove the #1 cylinder spark plug.

Hand rotate the crankshaft until it reaches the TDC mark while air is coming out of the #1 plug hole.

This is TDC on the compression stroke of #1 piston. It's about when it's plug should fire.

Remove the distributor's cap; the rotor will be pointing to the #1 plug post location.

It will be easiest to rotate the crankshaft if all plugs are removed; a great excuse to replace and re-gap them all.|||Looking at front of engine, #1 plug is on the right front. 1,3, 5, 7 on right. 2, 4, 6, 8 on left. Remove distributor cap Turn engine until timing mark on front is at 6 degrees before top center.When putting the distributor in, aline the rotor just before #1 on cap. You will need to know firing order, and place plug wires in cap from right to left according to firing order. You may have to re stab the distributor several times in order to get the rotor and cap to line up. Sorry I don't know the firing order of this engine. An auto parts should be able to tell you.|||Can't say for sure but if you can't find a diagram for it somewhere, I've found that the number 1 on the distributor is the one found on the front of the distributor cap when the cap in on the distributor. That's the front driver's side.|||Find someone else with an old Mopar and take a look where their plug wires go.Even if it's just a 318 I bet the firing order and position is the same.
