I was given a modified 440 but I have no idea what the specs of the cam are. I have the intake manifold off for other reasons, is there some way to look at the cam and tell what type it is? For example, is there a typical place with a stamped casting number? It is probably an aftermarket cam.
The timing cover is installed, I would rather not pull it if I dont have to.
Thanks~!|||If someone *didn't purposely grind-off the cam identification number, it will be stamped on the face of the cam where the large timing gear is bolted on.
If you or someone has a camshaft degree wheel it's possible to get every spec. off the camshaft. The engine has to be out of the car on an engine stand with the cylinder heads and timing chain cover off to do this. The cam must be in the motor along with the timing gears and chain.
You could find the lobe-lift of the cam with the intake off. The lifters must be in minus one intake and one exhaust push-rod to check lobe lift with a dial indicator. Multiply lobe lift times rocker arm ratio to get valve lift.|||About the only way to know what the lift and duration is would be to have a dial indicator put on the push rod and measure the camshafts lift and duration. Outside of pulling the camshaft and getting the numbers, there is really no other way to know. Even brand new cams come with an Advertised lift and duration, however things such as rocker arms, push rods and lifters can have an effect on the actual lift and duration. Using a dial indicator is about the only way to know for sure.
Hope this helps.
