How do I set the initial timing on a mopar 440?

I have it on the compression stroke, #1 cylinder, should I line the timing mark up on 0 before I put the distributer in, or should it be retarded, and if so how many degrees? Zero is top dead center right?|||you put the distributor in on top dead center on no-1 compression stroke, once that's done advance it about 10 degrees and it should fire right up,once its been ran and the engine is warm then power time it,advance it up until the engine miss fires the back it off until it smooths out ,you,ll find this is much better than setting it with timing light, and it will run a whole lot better, its an old drag racers trick to get all the power from it that you can,if you do it right it wil literally scream when you stomp on the gas pedal, and no hesitation points on it either, good luck.|||your welcome,if you can get it right like that it will run real good, mine will bark the tires when it changes from second to third gear, good luck.

|||You are on the right track..compression stroke...line the timing mark on zero and then drop in the distributor, ensuring the rotor points towards the number one (1) spark plug on the distributor cap. After getting the engine running you can then time accordingly. Best of luck.|||You got it right!!!
